SS145 “Sorrentina” – Santa Maria di Pozzano

The Challenge

Nestled along the iconic SS145 “Sorrentina”, a vital route connecting Naples to the world-famous Sorrento Peninsula and Amalfi Coast, the Santa Maria di Pozzano tunnel, stretching for about 5 km, stands as the longest and most strategic section of this coastal corridor. Every day, the road carries a mix of intense commuter traffic and millions of visitors heading toward one of Italy’s most celebrated tourist destinations. By 2025, the tunnel required a comprehensive technological upgrade to align with the latest European and Italian safety standards. The modernization project aimed to replace outdated analog CCTV and restore full functionality to the Automatic Incident Detection (AID) system, ensuring safer and smarter mobility along this essential gateway to the coast.

Anas was looking for:

  • Replacement of the obsolete analog CCTV system with a high-resolution IP system.
  • Deployment of an effective Automated Incident Detection system for real-time incident monitoring.
  • Full integration with the existing SCADA system and Anas Video surveillance and ITS platform for centralized control and monitoring.

The Solution

The project involved a complete modernization of the tunnel’s safety and monitoring infrastructure, transforming it into a state-of-the-art intelligent facility. The solution was carefully designed to leverage the existing camera layout, minimizing installation impact while replacing all legacy components with next-generation, high-performance technologies.

All analog fixed cameras were replaced with high-resolution IP models from leading brands, fully compliant with ONVIF standards to ensure interoperability and scalability. The old DVR system was upgraded to an open-platform IP video management system by Milestone Systems, providing enhanced flexibility, reliability, and seamless integration capabilities.

At the core of the modernization lies Sprinx traffix.ai, the Automated Incident Detection (DAI) solution based on advanced Deep Learning and 3D object tracking. The system automatically identifies critical events such as stopped vehicles, pedestrians, smoke, wrong-way driving, slow traffic, and congestion, turning standard surveillance cameras into intelligent, brand-agnostic sensors capable of real-time traffic analysis.

The new platform was also fully integrated with the SCADA system, the video surveillance network, and the Anas ITS platform, called RMT, enabling real-time alerts, advanced traffic analytics, and centralized monitoring. This comprehensive approach ensures faster response times, improved situational awareness, and a safer, smarter mobility experience along one of Italy’s most iconic coastal routes.

The Result
  • The modernization project significantly improved the safety standards within the tunnel, ensuring greater protection for all users.
  • By integrating Sprinx traffix.ai with Milestone Systems VMS, as well as Anas’ SCADA and ITS platforms, the tunnel now benefits from a unified, intelligent control system.
  • Smart, connected, and scalable infrastructure that sets a new benchmark for smart mobility along one of Italy’s most iconic coastal routes.
