Soknedal Tunnel
The Challenge
The Soknedal tunnel, a vital segment of Europavei 6 (E6) in Trøndelag, posed significant challenges in terms of safety and traffic management. With its 3.6 km length and one lane in each direction, ensuring smooth traffic flow and promptly addressing incidents within the tunnel were paramount concerns. Traditional methods of incident detection and traffic management fell short in meeting the modern demands of such a critical infrastructure project.

In response to these challenges, the National Road Administration, in collaboration with Sprinx and its partners Hatteland and Guard, sought innovative solutions leveraging cutting-edge technology. Sprinx’s traffix.ai software platform, utilizing state-of-the-art 3D object tracking technology, emerged as the cornerstone solution. Integrated seamlessly with the tunnel’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system via the ModBus communication protocol, traffix.ai provided real-time incident detection capabilities. The deployment of numerous cameras ensured comprehensive coverage of the tunnel’s length, and the Sprinx dragon platform enabled centralized management of all analytical processes, ensuring a robust architecture capable of failover, thus minimizing downtime and maximizing operational continuity.
