Faneque Double Tunnel

The Challenge

The completion of the second phase of the new La Aldea highway in Gran Canaria marked a monumental milestone in enhancing the island’s infrastructure. This phase involved the construction of the Faneque double tunnel, designed to streamline traffic and significantly reduce travel time for both residents and tourists.

Government of the Canary Islands was looking for:

  • Ensuring the safety of commuters with state-of-the-art technology.
  • Reducing travel time and congestion on the current GC-200 road.
  • Providing robust monitoring and control systems for the new tunnels.
  • Managing the increased traffic due to the island's year-round tourism.

The solution

Sprinx, in partnership with COMSA and thanks to its Spanish distributor CASMAR, played a crucial role in addressing these challenges by implementing an advanced Automatic Incident Detection (AID) system based on artificial intelligence. The traffix.ai system, coupled with the dragon platform, brought a new level of sophistication to traffic management within the Faneque double tunnel. The AI-driven traffic analysis system was designed to ensure high performance, enhancing both safety and traffic flow.

The native artificial intelligence capabilities of the system allowed for real-time inference, making it possible to detect and respond to various traffic incidents with unparalleled accuracy. The AID system underwent rigorous verification and validation tests, confirming its ability to detect incidents such as stop vehicles, pedestrians, wrong-way drivers, smoke, and slow traffic. These tests achieved a 100% detection rate across nearly 50 cameras, demonstrating the system’s reliability and effectiveness.

The control of the tunnels will initially be managed from the control centre established during the first phase of the new road, the La Aldea-El Risco section. Eventually, this responsibility will transition to the tunnel control centre on the GC-1 at Puerto Rico, all interconnected via a robust fibre optic network. This setup ensures seamless communication and control, vital for maintaining the tunnels’ operational efficiency and safety.

Sprinx’s solution also considered the unique demands of Gran Canaria’s traffic, which sees a significant increase due to the island’s favourable climate attracting tourists throughout the year. The AI-based traffic analysis system was tailored to ensure smooth and safe traffic flow, accommodating the seasonal influx of vehicles. This comprehensive approach to traffic management has been met with great satisfaction from all stakeholders, reinforcing the importance of advanced technology in modern infrastructure projects.

The Result
  • Elevated safety levels along a strategic route of the island.
  • Improved travel experiences for both residents and tourists, reducing travel time through the tunnels.
  • Seamless handling of traffic, preventing congestion and improving road safety.
