Svrčinovec and P’olana tunnels
The Challenge
The D3 motorway, part of the Multimodal Traffic Corridor VI, enhances connectivity between northern and eastern Europe. In June 2017, a new 15-kilometer section from Svrčinovec to Skalité was inaugurated, linking Slovakia's key east-west D1 motorway. This section is crucial for connecting Poland, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia.

A central feature of the D3 Svrčinovec-Skalité motorway is its advanced Automatic Incident Detection (AID) system, which monitors the Svrcinovec and P’olana tunnels. For this, Sprinx Technologies provided a state-of-the-art server-side solution, in partnership with local companies Gemtech, ADTS and SIEMENS.
The Sprinx SX-TRAFFIC AID software, processing Samsung Techwin CCTV cameras, is instrumental in enhancing traffic safety. It automatically detects incidents such as stopped vehicles, pedestrians, wrong-way drivers, smoke, spilled cargo, and traffic congestion. Additionally, it collects vital statistical traffic data throughout the tunnels. These events are integrated into the Siemens SCADA system and relayed to operators at the NDS traffic control centre in Horelica. The control room uses real-time video analytics to assess incidents and decide on necessary actions, such as dispatching highway patrols, police, or emergency crews.
The License Plate Recognition (LPR) technology is an essential component of the system. Intelligent cameras at tunnel entrances and exits read vehicle number plates and ADR codes, crucial for monitoring truck traffic and hazardous materials. This information is vital for targeted and timely responses to incidents within the tunnels.
