Korgfjell Tunnel

The Challenge

The Korgfjell Tunnel, an 8,530-meter road tunnel in Nordland County, Norway, replaced a hazardous mountain road. Its bidirectional nature and considerable length presented safety challenges, making swift incident detection crucial to prevent traffic disruptions and accidents.

Staten vegvesen - SVV was looking for:

  • An advanced Automatic Incident Detection (AID) solution to address safety challenges.
  • A system capable of integrating with existing infrastructure for seamless operation and communication.

The Solution

To address these challenges, an advanced AID solution centered around Sprinx’s traffix.ai application was meticulously implemented. Traffix.ai innovative 3D object tracking technology and its ability to run thermal cameras ensured accurate and reliable traffic video analytics, even in low-light conditions. The system comprised 136 camera units installed throughout the tunnel, each equipped with both a thermal camera for traffic analytics and an optical camera for standard video surveillance. The Hanwha Vision Thermal Cameras were integrated using the OPC communication protocol with the tunnel’s SCADA system, enabling seamless data exchange and real-time incident detection.

The control room in Mosjøen was alerted immediately of any incidents, allowing prompt activation of rescue processes and interventions. Collaboration with Hatteland Technology ensured that the AID solution was tailored to the specific needs of the Korgfjell Tunnel. Scanmatic, as the system integrator, ensured all components worked harmoniously, resulting in a reliable and effective solution to the previously hazardous conditions.

The Result
  • Enhanced safety: the integration of Sprinx’s traffix.ai platform with thermal cameras provided real-time monitoring and automatic incident detection, significantly reducing response times to accidents or other unusual events.
  • Operational efficiency: seamless integration with the SCADA system ensured the control room in Mosjøen could swiftly activate the appropriate rescue processes, minimizing disruptions and maintaining smooth traffic flow.
  • Improved travel conditions: modernizing the tunnel infrastructure eliminated the need for vehicles to navigate the treacherous mountain road, reducing the likelihood of accidents and blockages.
  • Long-term viability: the robust and reliable safety solution ensured the long-term protection of the substantial investment in the tunnel, enhancing its overall operational lifespan.
