A15, A11, A12 motorways

The Challenge

SALT and Concessioni del Tirreno, concessionaires of the ASTM Group, the world's second-largest motorway operator, manages the A15, A11, and A12 motorways in Liguria and Tuscany. These vital routes serve an economically dynamic area rich in small businesses and historical heritage and experience heavy traffic, especially in summer. The concessionaires upgraded their existing traffic analysis system with advanced AI technology to ensure safe, smooth traffic. This modernization updated the AID system in 13 tunnels while keeping the existing 258 cameras, minimizing traffic disruption.

The concessionaires was looking for:

  • Improving system performances thanks to the transition to AI-based technology.
  • Minimizing the impact on traffic flow during AID activity revamping.

The Solution

To ensure a safer and smoother journey for its travellers, the concessionaires has partnered with Sinelec, the technology arm of the ASTM Group, to implement the latest AI-based AID version of Sprinx, traffix.ai. The Sprinx traffix.ai system, leveraging field-proven deep learning technology and server-side support from NVIDIA cards, is compatible with any camera make and model and processes video streams via the RTSP standard. Initially tested in one tunnel, it has been successfully validated and implemented across all 13 tunnels.

The centralized AID management platform, Sprinx dragon, integrates seamlessly with the control room system, Sinelec’s ITS platform, Sincro. This ensures that control room operators benefit from enhanced efficiency without needing to learn a new interface or operating methods.

The AI system has increased traffic safety and flow without causing any disruptions. It provides operators with timely and reliable information, significantly reducing reaction times in the event of an incident.

The Result
"Results beyond the most optimistic expectations, timely detection of events, and zero false alarms: a success achieved thanks to the constant collaboration with the Sprinx staff. "
says Carlo Nieri, Technical Direction - Maintenance Investments A12 Installations and Stefano Vanni, Operation Management - Coordinator of the A12 Control Operations Center
