Rome: A90 City Ring – A91 Airport Connection

The Challenge

The Italian National Road Authority, ANAS, aims to provide the country with an efficient road network that is continuously improving and prepared for future challenges. These challenges range from electric vehicles to assisted driving and even autonomous vehicles. With this goal in mind, ANAS has chosen to focus on two of Italy's most critical road infrastructures: the A90 and A91 highways. The A90, called GRA, serves as the Rome ring road, while the A91 connects the city to Fiumicino, the national hub and Capital City Airport. These roads experience heavy traffic, with daily volumes ranging from 130,000 to 150,000 vehicles. Due to the high traffic flow, complex route geometries, and stringent safety requirements, monitoring and maintaining smooth traffic flow is a significant challenge.

ANAS was looking for:

  • An advanced traffic analysis system aimed at improving road safety and making traffic flows more efficient
  • Accurate data collection for statistical purposes.

The Solution

Sinelec, a leading integrator of ITS systems and the technological arm of ASTM Group, the world’s second-largest concessionaire, was awarded the Smart Road Anas contract for the A90 and A91 routes. Sinelec selected Sprinx for its traffic video analysis technology, specifically the traffix.ai software platform. With its integrated deep-learning module, this platform ensures high-performance video analysis even in challenging environmental conditions, such as outdoor installations.

The contract included strategically installing 64 highway cameras to monitor and analyze traffic. These Hanwha Vision cameras, integrated into multifunctional technology poles, are server-side analyzed. The traffic analysis system delivers high performance under various traffic and weather conditions. It allows for immediate and precise incident response, gathers statistical mobility data, and seamlessly integrates with other technological systems, particularly the Anas RMT operations room’s ITS platform. This integration enhances real-time alarms and insights.

The infrastructure now operates as a digital highway, utilizing IoT, AI, Big Data, and advanced sensors supported by Italy’s ultra-broadband network. This sophisticated digital platform acts as a “nervous system” for the road network, significantly improving traffic flow efficiency and road safety. The Smart Road project is one of Europe’s most innovative road infrastructure projects.

The Result
  • Reduced response times: the implementation of traffix.ai has led to a noticeable decrease in response times during traffic incidents, enhancing overall road safety.
  • Improved efficiency: the advanced traffic analysis and data collection capabilities have optimized traffic management, leading to smoother and more efficient vehicle movement on these busy highways.
