The Firminy Tunnel on the RN88 in the Loire department is a key link between Saint-Étienne and Le Puy-en-Velay, vital to the trans-European transport network.
With heavy daily traffic, including many trucks, ensuring safety in this tunnel was a challenge.
The tunnel’s high traffic volume, structural constraints, and complex lighting conditions made traditional monitoring systems less effective. To address these issues, Sprinx partnered with Bouygues Energie & Services to implement traffix.ai an AI-based Automatic Incident Detection (AID) system powered by Intel OpenVINO™ Toolkit. Integrated with the existing ITS and video surveillance systems managed by DIR Centre-Est (DIR-CE), traffix.ai uses advanced deep learning and 3D object tracking to accurately detect incidents, even in difficult areas. Rigorous testing by DIR-CE and CETU (the French Centre for Tunnel Studies) ensured the system’s reliability in spotting stopped vehicles, pedestrians, wrong-way drivers, and smoke. The result? Enhanced safety, quicker incident detection, and streamlined operations within the tunnel. The successful deployment of traffix.ai in the Firminy Tunnel showcases how AI can effectively solve complex infrastructure challenges, making this critical transportation link safer and more efficient.Inizio modulo
